Welcome to POV-globe,

This page belongs to the advanced internship "POV-globe" of the Robotics lab Heidelberg at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR). The aim of this internship is the construction of a "persistance of vision" (POV) globe. Persistance of vision uses the slowness of the human eye to create some kind of image or screen through the combination of fast moving, blinking light sources. In our case a strip of LEDs is attached to a ring which forms the surface of a globe, when the ring is spinning. If the blinking frequency is synchronized to the spinning frequency, a stable image forms on the globe.
As Pixels we use a Dotstar RGB LED strip form Adafruit, controlled by a Raspberry Pi, and built a makeshift framework to let it spin.
A short description of the project and our time management as .pdf file can be found here, unfortunately only in german. Our final presentation can be found here.
